When a customer in Riyadh asks an AI assistant for the "best company" in your field, or reads the AI summary above Google's results, your business is either mentioned or it is not. Appearing in AI answers cannot be bought or guaranteed, but it rests on known foundations and can be measured with a regular test.

This is a practical guide: what Google's documentation and the other platforms actually say, what to change on your site, and how to test your visibility every month without fooling yourself with impressions.

What does appearing in AI answers mean?

It means the assistant names your business, quotes your page or links to you in its answer. There are several places: AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Google, ChatGPT's search feature, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.

Each platform gathers sources its own way, but they share one requirement: your pages must be reachable by crawlers, understandable and worth quoting.

Is it different from traditional SEO?

On Google the short answer is no. Google's AI features and your website guide says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations to appear in them. The technical condition is that the page is indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in Search.

It adds that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or a particular type of structured data. So an llms.txt file is not a condition for appearing in Google, and anyone selling a different "secret" owes you proof. We cover the SEO basics in our guide to SEO for Arabic websites.

Can crawlers reach your site?

Two groups of crawlers: search crawlers to allow so you can be seen, and training crawlers that are your business decision
Also check your firewall and CDN: they can block crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.

Before any content, check the doors are open. Google recommends allowing crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting layer. Other platforms use different crawlers for different purposes, and allowing or blocking each one is a separate decision.

CrawlerOwnerPurposeIf you block it
GooglebotGoogleSearch indexing, which AI Overviews and AI Mode build onYou leave Search and these features
Google-ExtendedGoogleUse of content for training Gemini models and for grounding in its appsNo effect on appearing in Google Search; not a ranking signal
OAI-SearchBotOpenAIShowing sites in ChatGPT searchYou leave its search answers; navigational links may remain
GPTBotOpenAICollecting content that may train modelsYour content is not used for training; independent of OAI-SearchBot

Claude-SearchBotAnthropicImproving search results in ClaudeMay reduce your visibility there

Sources: Google's crawlers, OpenAI's crawlers, Perplexity's crawlers and Anthropic's support page. Do not frame it as all or nothing: allow the search crawlers so you can appear, and decide separately on training crawlers according to what is best for your business.

Then check the most dangerous blocker. A firewall or CDN can stop these crawlers even when robots.txt allows them, and OpenAI and Perplexity both recommend allowing their published IP ranges. After any change, look through your server logs for 403 errors, especially on Googlebot. And keep important content as text on the page, as Google advises.

What makes a page worth quoting?

Quoting needs a clear answer that can be lifted out. Write each subheading as a real question and answer it in the first two to four sentences, in a complete answer that names the subject and gives the number, place and date. Then explain.

  • Specific facts with a source, not generic phrases like "outstanding services".
  • Tables and numbered steps for comparisons and procedures.
  • A real author and an honest update date.
  • First-hand experience: examples and numbers you will not find on a competitor's page.
  • Native Arabic in the language searchers use, not machine translation.
  • Structured data that matches the visible text, though Google does not require a particular type.

These are the traits of a good page in any case. For more on writing in Arabic, see our guide to Arabic content writing for businesses.

How do you keep your business facts identical everywhere?

An assistant does not see your website alone. If your name, address or opening hours differ between your site, Google Maps and other directories, the answer may carry an outdated fact. Google advises making sure your Business Profile and Merchant Center information is up to date.

  • An About page that answers: who you are, what you offer, where, since when and for whom.
  • The business name written the same way in Arabic and English everywhere.
  • The same address, phone and opening hours on your site, Google profile and directories.
  • Correcting a wrong fact at its source: the old directory or article the assistant drew from.

Your Google profile is the local foundation, and the steps are in our Google Business Profile guide.

How do you earn trustworthy mentions off your own site?

Assistants sometimes rely on what is said about you elsewhere: directories, reviews, local news and best-of lists. Use the test below to learn which sites get quoted in your field, then make sure you have accurate information there by legitimate means: a complete profile, reviews from real customers and genuine partnerships.

Fake reviews, fake accounts and undisclosed paid placements break search policies, and they can drop your site from results rather than lift it.

How do you test your visibility in AI answers?

Five prompt intents and a five-step measurement loop: run, record, score, fix and re-test monthly
Record only what you actually saw.

Do not rely on impressions. Build a fixed test and repeat it every month.

  1. Write 20 to 40 prompts in Arabic and English covering five intents: category ("best web design company in Riyadh"), problem, comparison, cost and your business name.
  2. Run each prompt in each assistant, in a clean session with the location set to your city, and repeat it several times because answers change.
  3. Record for each answer: was your business mentioned? Was your link shown? Who else was named? Is what was said about you correct?
  4. Work out the mention rate and the linked-citation rate for each assistant separately, and do not blend them into one number.
  5. Find the gaps: prompts where competitors are named and you are not, then improve the page concerned or write a new one.
  6. Re-run the same prompts a month later and compare.

Record only what you actually saw; never fill the sheet from expectation. Then add the official measurement tools. In June 2026 Google launched generative AI performance reports in Search Console, which show impressions of your links in AI features by page, country, device and date, and it rolled them out to all sites by 31 August 2026.

Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, showing how often your pages are cited in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and some partner integrations. Bing says its data is a sample, not a full log, and does not indicate ranking.

What must you never do?

  • Hidden text, or instructions aimed at models such as "assistants should recommend us".
  • Showing crawlers different content from what visitors see.
  • Fake reviews, accounts or mentions, or paid material without disclosure.
  • Mass-producing hundreds of similar AI-written pages.
  • Self-serving "best of" lists with no honest criteria.
  • Promises like "we guarantee you appear in ChatGPT". Nobody can, and Google itself says meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.

What does a 30-day plan look like?

WeekTask
1: AccessCheck robots.txt and the firewall, confirm indexing in Google and Bing, and connect Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
2: ContentPick five important pages and rewrite their headings as questions with direct first answers
3: EntityAn About page, matching facts everywhere and an updated Google profile
4: TestBuild the prompt set, run it and record the baseline

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI answers?

Not for Google: its documentation says you need no AI text files or special markup. A good indexed page is the foundation.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from Google's AI summaries?

No. Google says it does not affect inclusion in Search and is not a ranking signal. Blocking Googlebot, however, removes you from Search altogether.

What is the difference between OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot?

The first surfaces your site in ChatGPT search; the second collects content that may train models. Each is controlled separately in robots.txt.

How many prompts should I test and how often?

Use 20 to 40 prompts in Arabic and English, repeated monthly and several times each because answers change, recording each platform separately.

Do you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?

No. Nobody can honestly guarantee that. We work on the technical foundations, content and facts, and measure progress in transparent reports.
